What is it like to be a volunteer?
Volunteer work is defined by Law 9,608/1998 as unpaid activity provided by an individual to a public entity of any nature, or a non-profit private institution, which has civic, cultural,educational, scientific, recreational or social welfare, including
including mutuality.
To be framed in the concept of the law of volunteering, work must have the following characteristics:
1. be voluntary, that is, it cannot be imposed or required as a counterpart to any benefit granted by the entity to the individual or his family;
2. be free;
3. be provided by the individual, in isolation, and not as a “subcontractor” of an organization of which the individual is a part and, therefore, compelled by the same to provide it; e
4. be provided to a governmental or private entity, which must be non-profit and aimed at public objectives.
How does a São Gonçalo Red Cross volunteer work?
The Volunteer is the person who cooperates with the Institution in different ways, without seeking profit or reward, but with the conviction that he acts for the good of the community, seeking, with this, some satisfaction.
In this sense, the Red Cross welcomes and encourages the offer of people who wish, voluntarily, to collaborate with the Institution. Volunteering assumes, in this context, a position of paramount importance, transversal, supporting projects and actions that are developed at different levels of the Red Cross.
Volunteer admission process:
Profile of a Red Cross volunteer:
To become a volunteer at the Red Cross, it is necessary to undergo a Basic Institutional training course that explains the history of the institution, its values and principles, as well as safety standards and basic notions of first aid.
Regardless of the activity of interest, every volunteer candidate must contact the Volunteer Department of the branch in their city, to go through the following steps:
- Scheduling the initial interview
- Interview - identification of the volunteer's profile
- Institutional Basic Training Course - FBI
- Formalization / Incorporation - Completion of the Term of Adhesion
- Registration / Identification - Registration of the Volunteer Department
- Specific Training - Training in the Activities Department
Once selected and these steps taken, the volunteer will be ready to perform the activities promoted by the institution, and will be officially referred by the Volunteer Department to the area of interest in the Entity. There will be periodic evaluations of the performance of their activities in the Institution.
The Red Cross is a voluntary aid institution whose purpose is to prevent and alleviate human suffering. Volunteering represents one of the seven Fundamental Principles, followed by the 185 National Red Cross Societies in the world.
The other principles are: Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Unity and Universality.
Origin of the Red Cross volunteer
Would it not be possible to form relief societies to care for the wounded in time of war, through the zealous, devoted and qualified work of volunteers?”, A Recollection of Solferino, Henry Dunant - Founder of the Red Cross, 1862.
Through these words, founder Henry Dunant, nearly 150 years ago, contributed to the growth of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Today, almost 100 million volunteers serve through the Red Cross and Red Crescent around the world. All work for the mission, in a spirit of humanity, mutual aid and solidarity.
